Early Years Curriculum
At St Bartholomew’s CE VA Primary School, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, supporting children from birth to five. This ensures we provide a rich and engaging environment where children can learn, grow and flourish.
At St Bart’s, our curriculum has been carefully designed to provide every child with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to thrive. It is built upon the statutory EYFS framework, current research and a deep understanding of child development. We recognise that children learn best through meaningful experiences, positive relationships and active exploration. The curriculum at St. Bart’s places the child at the centre of all learning. At St. Bartholomew’s, our EYFS curriculum provides every child with an accessible, nurturing and inspiring start to their learning journey. We aim to create rich opportunities for our children to develop firm foundations across all areas of learning, enabling them to grow into confident, curious and resilient learners.
Our curriculum places a strong emphasis on developing a love of reading and writing, broadening vocabulary and fostering creativity and communication. Our intent is to provide our children with range of familiar topics linked to their experiences, as well as unfamiliar topics to spark their interest and exploration of the wider world. Through purposeful play, exploration and first hand experiences, children learn to make sense of the world around them.
Rooted in our Christian values, we aim for every child to flourish, develop a lifelong love for learning and follow Jesus in all they do – preparing them for a successful transition into Key Stage 1 and beyond.
We aim to nurture:

Areas of Learning
The EYFS includes seven areas of learning and development which support the whole child.
The prime areas, which underpin all learning, are:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
These provide the foundation for the specific areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Together, these areas support children’s development emotionally, socially, physically and academically, ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to thrive.
